Instagram Adds Variable Format Support to Multi-Image Posts

31. 08. 2017.

Back in February, Instagram announced that users would now be able to post multiple images in a single post.

But there was a catch, albeit a minor one. When sharing multiple images in a single post, all of the images had to be square format, and only square format.

Now Instagram’s looking to fix that. Well, mostly anyway.

Instagram has announced that users can now choose landscape and portrait formats when sharing multiple photos and videos in one post.

Which is great, but you’re still somewhat limited – as explained by Instagram:

“To keep the experience smooth and consistent, however, all photos and videos in your post must be shared in the same format.”

So you can share in different formats, but you can’t cross-share different formats in one set. Which makes sense, but still a consideration nonetheless.

Multi-image Instagram posts have become a popular option – you’ve likely noticed the increased instances of the stacked squares showing up in the bottom right of images. Multi-image posts also offer new opportunities for brands, as outlined by Social Media Today contributor Andrew Macarthy in this post.

In addition to this, Instagram has also announced that users can now edit tagged people after you’ve posted multi-image posts and videos, and you can also save these posts as drafts (on iOS).

They’re relatively minor updates, but still, worth noting, with the format update and ability to save multi-image posts particularly relevant for social media managers.
